On Yer Bike! Dumfries Residents Told to Start Cycling

Earlier this year, we published an article investigating the worsening parking crisis in Dumfries. If you missed it, here’s the short version: Dumfries and Galloway Council axed traffic wardens from the regions, trusting motorists to voluntarily abide by parking restrictions.

Sadly, it didn’t work. One year on from the parking warden cull and parking spaces are constantly occupied. Few people are paying attention to the time restrictions.

The Bike Message Challenge

However, one organisation is trying to fix the problem. Cycling Dumfries, a campaign group dedicated to improving cycling conditions in and around Dumfries, has launched a new campaign to encourage commuters to swap their car for a bike.

The Bike Message Challenge plans to turn the everyday into an adventure, setting budding cyclists the goal of hitting eight predetermined locations within a six-week window to stand a chance of winning the campaign’s prize.

Challenge organiser, Rhian Davies, said:

“I’ve been absolutely delighted at the positive response from most of the places I’ve asked – not to mention the amazing range of shops that I didn’t even know existed.

“It’s restored my faith in the future of Dumfries. I hope that the people taking part take the opportunity to discover the wonderful shops and cafes we have right on our doorstep in the heart of the town.”

The scheme is being funded by the Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly Community Fund.

Cycling Dumfries had originally hoped to sign up a few dozen businesses around the city but the reception has been much more positive than they expected. Campaign co-ordinator, Sally Hinchcliffe, reports banks, shops, cafes, hairdressers, libraries, museums and dentists have already signed up.
