About Dumfries

The south of Scotland is a fantastic place for motorists. Low rolling hills are crisscrossed with sweeping strips of tarmac. However, the long drive down the M74 is a prime hunting ground for speed camera-wielding police officers and if you stray over the limit, you are likely to hear about it swiftly.

A historic market town straddling the River Nith, Dumfries is an intriguing Scottish town. It's surrounded by stunning greenery and packed full of wildlife. And the surrounding roads can certainly put drivers to the test. With about 750,000 vehicles passing through Dumfries on a regular basis, it is inevitable that some motorists will fall foul of motoring laws. Every year approximately 15,000 motoring offences are recorded in and around Dumfries. If you find yourself accused of a motoring offence, don't take the punishment lying down. Call or email our team today and we do our very best to defend you and achieve the best outcome in your case.

Nearest Courts

Dumfries Sheriff Court

Dumfries Sheriff Court

Dumfries Sheriff Court is housed in the Sheriff Court House building on Dumfries' Buccleuch Street. The building was historically a town hall but was sold to the local authorities in 1866. After a process of enlargement and refurbishment, it opened as the Court House in 1866. Dumfries Sheriff Court deals with the majority offences in Dumfries unless they are serious enough to proceed to the Supreme Courts at first instance. Solemn cases are heard by a sheriff and a jury. Summary procedures and civil matters are heard by a sheriff sitting alone.
Dumfries Justice of the Peace Court

Dumfries Justice of the Peace Court

Dumfries Justice of the Peace Courts sits alongside the Sheriff Court in the Sheriff Court House building. A Justice of the Peace Court will deal with less serious summary offences. These cases are either heard by a justice sitting alone or alongside two other justices. Summary cases are heard without the right to a jury trial and/or indictment.
