About Dumfries and Galloway

The south of Scotland is a brilliant place with low rolling hills and sweeping tarmac roads. However, the long drive down is a prime hunting ground for traffic police.

Dumfries or Queen of the South as this former royal burgh is known to many as, is surrounded by stunning greenery and eye-catching scenery. Full of wildlife and varying terrain, it can put drivers to the test driving through this beautiful part of the country. With about 750,000 vehicles moving through this area as a result of the ferry crossing, this adds another risk factor into the equation.

Every year over 15,000 people are charged with motoring offences in or around Dumfries. Many choose not to fight their case and become another motoring statistic. Others choose to fight their case with Dominic Sellar.

Dumfries Sheriff Court

Dumfries Sheriff Court is housed in the Sheriff Court House on Buccleuch Street in central Dumfries. Originally a local town hall, the court building was sold to the county authorities, enlarged and opened as the Court House in 1866. Dumfries Sheriff Court deals with most offences, unless they are serious enough to proceed to the Supreme Courts at first instance. Solemn cases are heard by a sheriff and a jury, while summary procedures and civil matters are heard by a sheriff sitting alone.

Dumfries Justice of the Peace Court

Dumfries Justice of the Peace Courts sits in the Sheriff Court House, alongside the Sheriff Court. The Justice of the Peace Court deals with summary offences, which are heard by a justice of the peace. A justice can sit alone or in a bench of three. Summary cases proceed without the right to a jury trial and/or indictment.
